I want to tell you about this pizza place, Mi Familias. I hardly have to tell the Pizza Ambassador that pizza is everywhere but it is interesting to hear about places. Lou and I are presently pleasant in the Barrio Puntas of Rincon Puerto Rico and had the pleasure of Pizza at Mi Familias right up the street from where we are staying.

A tour book tipped us to the place. So, after a day of touring the countryside we decided to check the place out. It has a poolside location at a hotel called the Lazy Parrot. The place is owned by Gabriel, Gabby as he is known. We ordered the Roja (red) it came with fresh tomato salsa (sauce) and fresh Mozzarella. You would have been proud of me Al. As we were waiting for our pie I made my way into the kitchen to talk with Gabby. Of course I told him of you, the Ambassador of Pizza, and Pizzatherapy.com.

His pies have thin crispy crusts. I was pumping him with all kinds of questions and he was telling me about the beehive brick oven that he imported from Italy. Sorry forgot the name Forno or something. It was made to be wood fired but he could not deal with maintaining the wood and all so he had it converted to gas fired. 600-800 degrees baking surface. As you can see he calls the oven El Capo, The Boss. He went on to tell me about the flour he uses and other preparation technique.

The guy is into his pizza. You can see all this in the pictures I’m sending. To bad you can’t taste them. The pizza was delicioso. Very simple tomato topping with sweet tomato. Sorta reminded me some of Pepe’s tomato. The crust was crisp but had a nice gluten doughyness to it.

I asked him how he became crazy for pizza. He said it all started ten years ago with him making pies on his backyard grill for his family and friends. They told him “Hey, this is some pretty good stuff. So he thought of starting a business and bought a pizza truck and was peddling his pies around Rincon but couldn’t make enough. The pizza was very popular and he got a reputation for making exceptional pizza. The owner of the Lazy Parrot approached him when the lease on another restaurant in his establishment was up, asking Gabby if he would like to take the place. That was five years ago and he is going strong.

So Alberto, that is the low down on Mi Familias in Rincon Puerto Rico. .
